Let staff with focused tasks work from home, and track the results
Updated: 2 days ago

Work from home increased the output of focused work.
The study. Economists from Stanford and Peking University ran a random test at Ctrip, a large Chinese travel company. The researchers put call center staff who wanted to work from home into home or office groups at random. The test continued for 9 months.
The finding. Staff at home performed 13% better. They took fewer breaks and sick days. They also took more calls each minute. Half as many of them left the company. But promotion rates for home workers decreased.
Why it matters. This was 1 of the first random tests of work from home. It shows that work from home can increase output and keep staff. This is true for focused work that you can measure.
The takeaway. Let staff with focused, measurable work choose to work from home. Track output. Make sure that home staff still get promotions.
