Use AI for first drafts of business writing

AI gave the most help to the weaker writers.

The study. 2 MIT economists asked 453 college-educated professionals to do writing tasks from their jobs, such as press releases and short reports. Half of them could use ChatGPT.

The finding. The ChatGPT group finished the tasks 40% faster. Expert judges rated their work 18% higher. Weaker writers improved more. Thus, the difference between people became smaller.

Why it matters. A large part of office work is writing. This test shows that AI can save a large part of that time. It also shows how people used AI. Many people used AI for the first draft. Then they edited the draft less.

The takeaway. Use AI for first drafts of routine writing. Before people send the text, tell them to edit it and check the facts.
